I was touched by Fiona Apple’s moving tribute to her dying dog; at the same time, after some experience with dog owners, I’m slightly hesitant to get involved with another one (although that’s not a popular thing to admit). I’ve experienced all these issues except for #1, thankfully, and #9:

I guess it’s all a part of compatibility, isn’t it? What we want to deal with. On the flip side a man who will love and walk my dogs is a man I could seriously fall in love with! I have found that most men, even being good for the most part, do not have the patience to walk my dogs in a pinch.

I am a dog person. Although we don’t have one right now. But, at least with the impromptu trips, there are lots of places that do allow dogs to stay, so you can always bring the dog with you. But, maybe that’s just another strike on the list for a non dog lover. I’m glad I didn’t fall in love with a cat owner because I’m highly allergic! I do agree with Yogagurl, a man who will walk your dog and take care of it as his own is a good man!

I remember a story my mom shared with me at least 20 years ago:
She had a girlfriend who lived alone with her beloved cat and was dating a man who, at best, simply tolerated the cat. He wanted to marry but this woman was smart, independent and still uncertain about several aspects of the relationship.
One night after having spent the day in bed with the flu, this woman made her way to the kitchen and happened upon her boyfriend putting a saucer of tea on the counter for kitty. This, the cherished ritual she shared with her kitty each night, had been overlooked by her due to being sick.
I don’t know what happened with this couple, I guess that’s not important. But I never forgot that story : )
